Elazar is a 60-minute documentary about the life and work of the famous Austrian-Israeli poet and aphorist Elazar Benyoëtz (born Paul Koppel). Elazar Benyoëtz was born in 1937 into a devout Jewish family in Wiener Neustadt. Shortly afterwards, his family fled the threat of the Nazis via Bratislava and Budapest to the Mandate of Palestine. There, following the early death of his father, the Koppel family spoke nothing but Hebrew. It was only when Benyoëtz, as a teenager, discovered the poems of Else Lasker-Schüler that he began to relearn his mother tongue. Elazar Benyoëtz’s fascination with German-Jewish literature continued to grow until, in 1962, he decided to move to Berlin – three years before the two countries established formal relations. There he launched the mammoth project that Renate Heuer would later continue for decades: the Bibliographia Judaica. After three years, he moved back to Israel, was ordained as a rabbi, amongst other things, and married the Algerian calligrapher Renée Guegj. He aspired to a literary career as a Hebrew poet and was accepted as the youngest member of the Hebrew Writers’ Association. Given the ever-increasing number of antisemitic incidents, this documentary film could help to break down prejudices and combat antisemitism.

Elazar ist ein 60-minütiger Dokumentarfilm über das Leben und Werk des berühmten österreichisch-israelischen Dichters und Aphoristikers Elazar Benyoëtz (geb. Paul Koppel). Elazar Benyoëtz wurde 1937 in eine gläubige jüdische Familie in Wiener Neustadt geboren. Kurz darauf floh seine Familie vor der Bedrohung durch die Nazis über Bratislava und Budapest ins Mandatsgebiet Palästina. Dort sprach die Familie Koppel nach dem frühen Tod des Vaters ausschließlich Hebräisch. Erst als Benyoëtz als Teenager die Gedichte von Else Lasker-Schüler entdeckte, begann er, seine Muttersprache wieder zu lernen. Elazar Benyoëtz Faszination für deutsch-jüdische Literatur wuchs weiter, bis er 1962 die Entscheidung traf, nach Berlin zu ziehen – drei Jahre bevor beide Länder formelle Beziehungen aufnahmen. Dort stieß er das Mammutprojekt an, das später Renate Heuer jahrzehntelang weiterführte: die Bibliographia Judaica. Nach drei Jahren zog er zurück nach Israel, wurde unter anderem als Rabbiner ordiniert und heiratete die algerische Kalligraphin Renée Guegj. Er war bestrebt, eine literarische Karriere als hebräischer Dichter hinzulegen und wurde als jüngstes Mitglied in die Hebrew Writer's Association aufgenommen. Aufgrund der immer weiter steigenden Zahl antisemitischen Vorfälle kann dieser Dokumentarfilm dazu beitragen, Vorurteile und Antisemitismus abzubauen.
