Fremde Erde - Festival Verfemte Musik 2026

 

Through this music festival, organised by VIVA LA CLASSICA! in collaboration with the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute, the Jewish Community of Vienna, PEN Austria and the Exilarte Centre at the mdw, the public will be introduced to those composers who fell victim to Nazi tyranny, and their forgotten works will be performed once again. Many of the musicians, particularly Jews, were sent to concentration camps and murdered; only a few managed to escape. The scores of these ostracised composers remained lost for decades or were never published; their music was no longer played and often fell into obscurity.

Mit dem Musikfestival, das VIVA LA CLASSICA! gemeinsam mit dem Wiener Wiesenthal Institut, der IKG Wien, dem PEN Austria und dem Exilarte Zentrum der mdw durchführt, werden jene Komponist:innen, die Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft wurden, in der Öffentlichkeit bekannt gemacht und ihre in Vergessenheit geratenen Werke wieder zur Aufführung bringen. Viele der Musiker:innen, vor allem aber Jüdinnen und Juden, kamen in Konzentrationslager und wurden ermordet, nur wenigen gelang die Flucht. Die Noten der verfemten Komponist:innen blieben über Jahrzehnte verschollen oder wurden nicht verlegt, ihre Musik wurde nicht mehr gespielt und geriet oft in Vergessenheit.
