“Collar the lot!” In 1940, these were the words with which the then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called for Austrians and Germans to be detained in internment camps. It was a reaction to growing fears of an invasion, which placed German and Austrian refugees living in Britain under general suspicion as “enemy aliens”. At the heart of the film is Hans Gál’s diary, which he kept throughout his internment. In his entries, he describes his arrest, the poor conditions and the despair of the internees, but also his gratitude for being able to write music – a skill that gave him solace during this time. Through visits to the original locations in Britain and interviews with Gál’s daughter Eva Fox-Gál, musicologist Michael Haas, historians and other interviewees, the documentary traces the composer’s life and its historical context.

"Nehmt sie alle fest!“ Unter diesem Leitspruch rief der damalige britische Premier Winston Churchill 1940 dazu auf, Österreicher:innen und Deutsche in Internierungslagern gefangen zu nehmen. Es war eine Reaktion auf die wachsende Angst vor einer Invasion, die die in Großbritannien lebenden deutschen und österreichischen Geflüchteten als „enemy aliens“ unter Generalverdacht stellte. Im Zentrum des Films steht das Tagebuch von Hans Gál, welches er während der gesamten Zeit seiner Internierung verfasste. In den Einträgen beschreibt er die Festnahme, die schlechten Bedingungen und die Verzweiflung der Internierten, gleichermaßen aber auch seine Dankbarkeit dafür Musik schreiben zu können – eine Fähigkeit, die ihm in dieser Zeit Halt gibt. Bei Besuchen der Originalschauplätze in Großbritannien und Interviews mit Gáls Tochter Eva Fox-Gál, Musikwissenschaftler Michael Haas, Historiker:innen und weiteren Gesprächs-partner:innen werden das Leben des Komponisten sowie die geschichtlichen Rahmenbedingungen nachgezeichnet.
