The Vienna Stadttempel on Seitenstettengasse was built in 1826 to plans by the architect Josef Georg Kornhäusel; it is an example of Neoclassical religious architecture and, at the same time, the only synagogue in Vienna to have survived the Nazi November pogroms of 1938. Despite its survival, the building was significantly damaged and vandalised in 1938/39 during the Nazi persecution. Many of these interventions and alterations have remained hidden within the building until now and have so far been inadequately studied from a scholarly perspective. The book project “200 Years of the Vienna Stadttempel” aims to document the findings of this research as a key component of the project, thereby mapping the traces of Nazi violence in and around the Stadttempel from an architectural-historical perspective. The project thus makes an important contribution to documenting the physical traces of Nazi violence at the Stadttempel. At the same time, it creates a sound foundation for the cultural remembrance and interpretation of this central site of Jewish history and present-day life in Vienna.

Der Wiener Stadttempel in der Seitenstettengasse, wurde 1826 nach Plänen des Architekten Josef Georg Kornhäusel errichtet, er ist ein Beispiel klassizistischer Sakralarchitektur und zugleich die einzige Synagoge in Wien, die die nationalsozialistischen Novemberpogrome 1938 überstanden hat. Trotz seines Fortbestehens wurde der Bau 1938/39 im Zuge der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung erheblich beschädigt und verwüstet. Viele dieser Eingriffe und Überformungen waren bis heute im Gebäude verborgen und bislang nur unzureichend wissenschaftlich untersucht. Das Buchprojekt „200 Jahre Wiener Stadttempel“ möchte die Ergebnisse dieser Erforschung als einen wichtigen Bestandteil dokumentieren und somit die Spuren der nationalsozialistischen Gewalt im und am Stadttempel bauhistorisch abbilden. Das Projekt leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Dokumentation der materiellen Spuren nationalsozialistischer Gewalt am Stadttempel. Gleichzeitig schafft es eine fundierte Grundlage für eine erinnerungskulturelle Vermittlung dieses zentralen Ortes jüdischer Geschichte und Gegenwart in Wien.
