Description
The aim of the project is to produce a scientifically sound comprehensive account of forced labour in Vorarlberg during the period 1938-1945. Vorarlberg, in particular, offers a particularly illuminating field of study for regional manifestations of the Nazi forced labour system due to its specific economic structure. The combination of large-scale energy infrastructure projects, decentralised industry and the agricultural structure promises nuanced insights into the organisation, control and utilisation of forced labour. The project thus fills a significant research gap within Austrian historiography of the Nazi era and, for the first time, establishes a sound foundation for academic, public and remembrance-related engagement with this chapter of the region’s history. The project makes a significant contribution to the lasting embedding of the debate on Nazi forced labour in regional memory.

Ziel des Projekts ist die Erstellung einer wissenschaftlich fundierten Gesamtdarstellung der Zwangsarbeit in Vorarlberg im Zeitraum 1938–1945. Gerade Vorarlberg bietet aufgrund seiner spezifischen Wirtschaftsstruktur ein besonders aussagekräftiges Untersuchungsfeld für regionale Ausprägungen des NS-Zwangsarbeitssystems. Die Kombination aus Großprojekten der Energieinfrastruktur, dezentraler Industrie und agrarischer Struktur verspricht differenzierte Einblicke in Organisation, Kontrolle und Nutzung von Zwangsarbeit. Das Projekt schließt somit eine signifikante Forschungslücke innerhalb der österreichischen NS-Historiografie und schafft erstmals eine tragfähige Grundlage für die wissenschaftliche, öffentliche und erinnerungspolitische Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Kapitel der Landesgeschichte. Das Projekt trägt wesentlich zur nachhaltigen Verankerung der Auseinandersetzung mit NS-Zwangsarbeit im regionalen Gedächtnis bei.
