Internationaler Gedenktag an den Völkermord an den Sinti und Roma

 

The remembrance ceremony on 2 August at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna recalls the genocide of the Sinti and Roma during the Nazi era. It draws on the historical significance of this date – the murder of the last people held in the ‘Gypsy camp’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of 2 to 3 August 1944. A key feature of the project is the extensive collaboration with numerous Sinti and Roma associations and organisations from Austria. The event is deliberately organised as a joint project, thereby strengthening the community’s internal cohesion. At the same time, it is aimed at the general public and promotes dialogue between the minority and the majority society.

Die Gedenkveranstaltung am 2. August im Stephansdom Wien erinnert an den Völkermord an den Sinti und Roma während des Nationalsozialismus. Sie knüpft an die historische Bedeutung dieses Datums an – die Ermordung der letzten im „Zigeunerlager“ von Auschwitz-Birkenau festgehaltenen Menschen in der Nacht vom 2. auf den 3. August 1944. Ein zentrales Merkmal des Projekts ist die breite Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Sinti- und Roma-Vereinen und Organisationen aus Österreich. Die Veranstaltung wird bewusst als gemeinsames Projekt umgesetzt und stärkt dadurch den inneren Zusammenhalt der Community. Gleichzeitig richtet sie sich an die breite Öffentlichkeit und fördert den Dialog zwischen Minderheit und Mehrheitsgesellschaft.
