The history of the persecution of the Yenish people and of Yenish victims of the Nazi regime has, to this day, not been adequately addressed, either academically or by society. One aim of this publication is to remedy this situation. This project brings together several significant occasions: the 25th anniversary of the book’s first publication, the 20th anniversary of Romed Mungenast’s death, and the ongoing and demonstrable need for an accessible edition of a work that has been out of print for years. The new edition is being edited by Michael Haupt and Heidi Schleich. It is being published in an expanded and updated form: amongst other things, a new academic introduction brings the state of research on the history and present-day situation of the Yenish up to date. A key (new) component of this volume is the contribution by the Carinthian author Simone Schönett, in which she examines the specific circumstances of the persecution of Yenish women during the Nazi era.

Die Geschichte der Verfolgung Jenischer und der jenischen NS-Opfer ist bis heute wissenschaftlich und gesellschaftlich unzureichend aufgearbeitet. Das zu verbessern, ist ein Ziel dieser Publikation. Dieses Projekt verbindet mehrere gewichtige Anlässe: den 25. Jahrestag der Erstveröffentlichung, den 20. Todestag von Romed Mungenast sowie den anhaltenden und dokumentierbaren Bedarf nach einer zugänglichen Ausgabe des seit Jahren vergriffenen Werkes. Die Neuauflage wird von Michael Haupt und Heidi Schleich redaktionell betreut. Sie erscheint in erweiterter und aktualisierter Form: Unter anderem bringt eine neue wissenschaftliche Einleitung den Forschungsstand zur Geschichte und Gegenwart der Jenischen auf den neuesten Stand. Ein wesentlicher (neuer) Bestandteil dieses Bandes ist der Beitrag der Kärntner Autorin Simone Schönett, die sich darin mit der spezifischen Verfolgungssituation jenischer Frauen in der NS-Zeit auseinandersetzt.
