On 16 May 2011 the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber would have turned 120. To mark this occasion, in early 2011 a biography of the exceptional artist was published by Milena Publishers, which wanted to do more than just describe the lyrical tenor’s impressive career, his relationships and the scandals he was caught up in. Instead, Tauber’s years of emigration form the focus, which took the singer, musician, composer and conductor via Austria to England. Tauber’s fate stands for the fate of many other Austrian artists with Jewish roots who were extremely successful in Germany until 1933 and who had to start their exile in Austria, their actual home. “Tomorrow I must leave this place” tells the stories of emigration of colleagues and friends of Tauber, particularly Joseph Schmidt. Tauber, who is still considered the most important tenor after Enrico Caruso was THE Lehár and Mozart interpreter of the 1920s to 1940s. He loved the staging of his performances, tearing down the high walls between serious music and entertainment music and becoming the first international “popstar” of the 20th century. The tenor shaped the music business of the interwar years like no other beyond his own field of work. As Richard Tauber was probably one of the most important representatives of the Austrian operetta before 1938, this new Tauber biography particularly deals with the matter of the lasting downfall of the operetta as a result of Nazi cultural policy.

Am 16. Mai 2011 hat sich zum 120. Mal der Geburtstag des österreichischen Tenors Richard Tauber gejährt. Aus diesem Anlass erschien im Frühjahr 2011 im Milena Verlag eine Biografie des Ausnahmekünstlers, die mehr will als nur von der beeindruckenden Karriere des lyrischen Tenors, seinen Liebesbeziehungen und den Skandalen, in die er verwickelt war, zu erzählen. Vielmehr stehen die Jahre der Emigration Taubers im Zentrum, die den Sänger, Musiker, Komponisten und Dirigenten über eine Zwischenstation in Österreich nach England führten. Das Schicksal Taubers steht dabei stellvertretend für viele andere österreichische Künstler mit jüdischen Wurzeln, die bis 1933 in Deutschland höchst erfolgreich waren und ihr Exil in Österreich, ihrer eigentlichen Heimat, beginnen mussten. In „Morgen muss ich fort von hier“ werden auch die Emigrationsschicksale von Kollegen und Freunden Taubers erzählt, allen voran Joseph Schmidt. Tauber, der bis heute als wichtigster Tenor neben Enrico Caruso gilt, war der Lehár- & Mozart-Interpret der 1920er- bis 1940er-Jahre. Er liebte die Inszenierung seiner Auftritte, riss dabei die hohen Mauern zwischen E- und U-Musik nieder und wurde der erste internationale „Popstar“ des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Tenor prägte wie kein anderer das Musikgeschäft der Zwischenkriegszeit über sein eigenes Wirken hinaus. Da Richard Tauber wohl einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Operette vor 1938 war, beleuchtet diese neue Tauber-Biografie besonders das Thema der nachhaltigen Zerstörung der Operette durch die NS-Kulturpolitik.
