The “friend of important men”, as the Vienna-born Hertha Pauli was often described, started writing poems and stories at the tender age of eight. She took acting lessons with Hedwig Bleibtreu and in 1925 was given her first role at the Breslau Lobe Theater. In 1927 she was brought to Berlin by Max Reinhardt, and, on the side, published among others in “Simplicissimus” and in the Prague “Bohemia”. In 1933 she returned to Vienna and ran the “Austrian Correspondence”, a literary agency, with Karl Frucht. In 1936 her first novel was published, “Toni”. However, the second, which was dedicated to Bertha von Suttner, was put on the “list of damaging and undesirable writing” in Germany on 8 March 1938. In 1938 she fled via Switzerland to Paris and continued running her literary agency, writing anti-Fascist texts which were bound into harmless, widespread books and smuggled into Germany. In 1940 she went to Marseille and became a signing founder of the Emergency Rescue Committee. She described her flight to New Jersey in four instalments in the journal “Aufbau”. She was subsequently able to renew her contact to her colleagues and received a large number of commissions. In 1941 she went to Hollywood and worked as a secretary for Walter Mehring at the film company MGM. From 1942 she lived in New York again. She returned to Vienna for the first time in 1952 and from that time on visited her former hometown once a year. She made many journeys to Europe, held readings and lectures and wrote biographies and children’s books. Her more well-known brother, the physicist Wolfgang Pauli (1900–1958), received the Nobel Prize in 1945.

Die „Freundin bedeutender Männer“, wie die 1906 in Wien geborene Hertha Pauli oft bezeichnet wurde, begann schon als Achtjährige Gedichte und Erzählungen zu schreiben. Sie nahm bei Hedwig Bleibtreu Schauspielunterricht und erhielt 1925 ihr erstes Engagement am Breslauer Lobe-Theater. 1927 wurde sie von Max Reinhardt nach Berlin geholt, veröffentlichte nebenbei unter anderem im „Simplicissimus“ und in der Prager „Bohemia“. 1933 kehrte sie nach Wien zurück und betrieb mit Karl Frucht die „Österreichische Korrespondenz“, eine literarische Agentur. 1936 erschien ihr erster Roman „Toni“. Der Zweite jedoch, der sich Bertha von Suttner widmete, wurde am 8.3.1938 in Deutschland auf die „Liste des schädlichen und unerwünschten Schrifttums“ gesetzt. 1938 floh sie über die Schweiz nach Paris und führte ihre literarische Agentur weiter und verfasste antifaschistische Texte, die, in harmlose, weitverbreitete Bücher eingebunden, nach Deutschland geschmuggelt wurden. 1940 ging sie nach Marseille und trug mit ihrer Unterschrift zur Gründung des Emergency Rescue Committees bei. Ihre Flucht nach New Jersey schilderte sie in Fortsetzungen im „Aufbau“. Sie konnte daraufhin ihre Kontakte zu Kolleginnen und Kollegen erneuern und erhielt viele Aufträge. 1941 ging sie nach Hollywood und war als Sekretärin von Walter Mehring für die Filmgesellschaft MGM tätig. Ab 1942 lebte sie wieder in New York. 1952 kam sie erstmals wieder nach Wien und von da an besuchte sie ihre Heimatstadt einmal im Jahr. Sie unternahm zahlreiche Europareisen, hielt Lesungen und Vorträge und verfasste Biografien und Kinderbücher. Ihr besser bekannter Bruder, der Physiker Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958) erhielt 1945 den Nobelpreis.
