Description

Marjorie Perloff was born Gabriele Schuller Mintz on 28 September 1931 in Vienna. She went to elementary school here before her family emigrated on 12 March 1938 to the USA, via Zurich and Italy. There, she attended the Fieldston school in New York, the Oberlin College, Ohio and the Barnard College, New York, from which she graduated with summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. She gained her master’s degree in English at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. in 1956 and her Ph.D. in 1965. In 1953 she married the medic Joseph K. Perloff and they had two daughters. The spent the years 1954 to 1955 in London. She began to teach at universities in 1966 at the Catholic University, Washington D.C., where she taught all areas of English Literature including Modern Poetry. In 1972 she was appointed Associate Professor of English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. During this time, she began writing for New Republic and Washington Post. In 1987 she followed her reputation as Professor of English and Comparative Literature to Stanford University. Since 1990 she has been Sadie Derham Patek Professor in Humanities at Stanford University. The book describes her journey from Austria to the USA, her relationship then and now to her country of birth and her impressive career in the United States.

März 1938 über Zürich und Italien in die USA emigrierte. Dort besuchte sie die Fieldston School in New York, das Oberlin College, Ohio sowie das Barnard College, New York, das sie 1953 mit summa cum laude abschloß, Phi Beta Kappa. Perloff und bekam zwei Töchter. Die Jahre 1954 bis 1955 verbrachte sie in London. Ihre universitäre Lehrtätigkeit begann 1966 an der Catholic University, Washington D.C., wo sie ‚Modern Poetry‘ neben allen anderen Bereichen der englischen Literatur unterrichtete.1972 ging sie als Associate Professor of English an die University of Maryland, Baltimore.
