Before the “Final solution to the Jewish question” in the concentration camps by the Nazis, besides the emigration policies there was another short-term operation in which the newly conquered territory around the Polish town of Nisko was settled. In October 1939 the Central Department for Jewish Emigration, under Eichmann, carried out the first transports of Jewish men from Vienna, Mährisch-Ostrau and Kattowitz to Nisko as a prelude to the planned systematic deportation of Jews. The creation of a barracks camp Zarzecze was planned. However, this plan soon failed: some of the men were sent back to Vienna and later deported to concentration camps; many others were chased over the German-Soviet demarcation line and imprisoned by the Soviets, some embarked on a terrible fate through many concentration camps and countries, many of them died in the camp. Despite being oft-mentioned in Holocaust research, so far there has been no comprehensive portrayal of the first territorial “attempt at a solution to the Jewish problem” by the Nazis. Following many years of research on the basis of original files of the Reich Security Head Office, the Jewish Communities Vienna and Mährisch-Ostrau and oral interviews with survivors, Dr. Jonny Moser, who unfortunately passed away in 2011, has now presented the first comprehensive portrayal of the Nisko operation.

Vor der „Endlösung der Judenfrage“ in den Konzentrationslagern durch die Nazis gab es neben der Auswanderungspolitik kurzfristig auch eine weitere Aktion, bei der man eine Ansiedlung ins soeben eroberte Gebiet rund um die polnische Stadt Nisko in Angriff nahm. Im Oktober 1939 führte die Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung unter Eichmann als Auftakt zur geplanten systematischen Judendeportation erste Transporte jüdischer Männer aus Wien, Mährisch-Ostrau und Kattowitz nach Nisko durch. Man plante die Errichtung des Barackenlagers Zarzecze. Das Vorhaben scheiterte jedoch bald: ein Teil der Männer wurde nach Wien zurückgeschickt – und später ins KZ verschleppt, etliche jagte man über die deutsch-sowjetische Demarkationslinie in die Inhaftierung durch Sowjets, manche führte ein abenteuerliches Schicksal durch mehrere Lager und Länder, viele starben noch im Lager. In der Holocaust-Forschung zwar stets erwähnt, existiert bislang noch keine ausführliche Darstellung dieser ersten territorialen „Lösungsversuche des Judenproblems“ durch die Nazis. Dr. Jonny Moser, 2011 leider verstorben, legt nach langjährigen Recherchen auf Basis von Originalakten des Reichsicherheitshauptamtes, der israelitischen Kultusgemeinden Wien und Mährisch-Ostrau und mündlicher Befragung Überlebender eine erste umfassende Darstellung der Nisko-Aktion vor.
