T. Scarlett Epstein, born 1922 in Vienna as Trude Grünwald, fled with her parents to Albania in 1938 and to London in 1939, studied economic development and anthropology in Manchester and became an internationally renowned award-winning expert for development projects focusing on Papua-Guinea and South India. Her autobiography describes her experiences as a refugee, her anthropologically well-founded research on development problems which is too little known in the German-speaking world, her pioneering role in a development economy tied to the concrete circumstances, her dedication in the fight against AIDS and her campaigning for women’s rights. T. Scarlett Epstein was awarded an OBE, is Honorary Fellow of the Association of Social Anthropologists and of the Indian Anthropological Association. She has published a large amount of specialist literature and today lives in London. The book tells the extraordinary story of a woman who took the lessons learned through her own experiences of expulsion and exile and used them to positively shape her own life and scientific goals.

Scarlett Epstein, geb. 1922 als Trude Grünwald in Wien, flüchtete mit den Eltern 1938 nach Albanien, 1939 nach London, studierte Entwicklungsökonomie und Anthropologie in Manchester und wurde zur weltweit angesehenen und vielfach ausgezeichneten Expertin für Entwicklungsprojekte mit Schwerpunkten in Papua-Guinea und Südindien. Ihre Autobiographie konfrontiert mit ihren Erfahrungen als Flüchtling mit ihren im deutschen Sprachraum viel zu wenig bekannten anthropologisch fundierten Forschungen zur Entwicklungsproblematik, ihrer Pionierrolle in einer an den konkreten Verhältnissen anknüpfenden Entwicklungsökonomie, ihrem Engagement in der Bekämpfung von AIDS und ihrem Einsatz für die Rechte der Frau. T. Scarlett ist Member of OBE, Honorary Fellow der Association of Social Anthropologists und der Indian Anthropological Association. Sie publizierte zahlreiche Fachbücher und lebt heute in London. Das Buch konfrontiert mit dem außerordentlichen Schicksal einer Frau, die aus der Erfahrung von Vertreibung und Exil engagiert Konsequenzen für ihre eigene Lebensgestaltung und ihre wissenschaftlichen Zielsetzungen gezogen hat.
