Description

About the author: Richard Berczeller started his literary career with publications in the “New Yorker”. He was Jewish, a Social Democrat and a doctor in Mattersburg. After being banished from Burgenland in 1938 and their escape from Europe, the Berczeller family set up home in New York. In the second half of his life, Richard Berczeller dedicated himself to writing. He wrote short stories and autobiographical novels. Richard Berczeller, who passed away at the age of 92 on 3 January 1994 in New York, was a gifted master of survival and master of living and a symbolic figure for the Jews forced out of Burgenland in 1938.

Über den Autor: Richard Berczeller begründete seine literarische Karriere mit Veröffentlichungen im „New Yorker". Er war Jude, Sozialdemokrat und Arzt in Mattersburg. Nach der Vertreibung aus dem Burgenland im Jahr 1938 und der Flucht aus Europa fasste Familie Berczeller in New York Fuß. Richard Berczeller widmete sich in seiner zweiten Lebenshälfte dem Schreiben. Er verfasste Kurzgeschichten und autobiografische Romane. Richard Berczeller, am 3. Jänner 1994 im Alter von 92 Jahren in New York verstorben, war ein begnadeter Überlebens- wie auch Lebenskünstler und eine Symbolfigur für die 1938 aus dem Burgenland vertriebenen Juden.
