The tragic count after not quite one year of Nazi occupation of Hungarian territory in 1944/45 was over 500,000 Hungarian Jewish victims. Despite the large numbers of Hungarian Jews murdered, remembrance of the Holocaust was neglected for long time in Hungary. Like in many other European states, a sensitized awareness of the fate of the Jews was lacking, despite the fact that Hungary not has to come to terms with its role in the Holocaust but also three different right wing dictatorial pasts: the authoritarian-conservative government under Miklós Horthy (1920–1944), the Fascist Arrow Cross Party under Ferenc Szálasi (1944–1945) and the Nazi German occupying power (1944–1945).

Die tragische Bilanz der nicht ganz ein Jahr lang dauernden nationalsozialistischen Besatzungszeit auf ungarischem Territorium im Jahr 1944/45 waren mehr als 500.000 ungarisch-jüdische Opfer. Trotz der hohen Zahlen ungarisch-jüdischer Ermordeter wurde die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in Ungarn lange Zeit vernachlässigt. Wie auch in vielen anderen europäischen Staaten fehlte ein sensibilisiertes Bewusstsein für das Schicksal der Juden. Dabei musste sich Ungarn nicht nur mit der Beteiligung am Holocaust, sondern gleich mit drei verschiedenen rechtsdiktatorischen „Vergangenheiten“ auseinandersetzen: mit der autoritär-konservativen Regierung unter Miklós Horthy (1920-1944), den faschistischen Pfeilkreuzlern unter Ferenc Szálasi (1944-1945) und mit der nationalsozialistischen deutschen Besatzungsmacht (1944-1945).
