Victor Gruen, born Viktor Grünbaum, is perhaps the most influential city planner of the 20th century. The Jewish emigrant from Vienna is considered the “inventor of the shopping mall”. Despite this, his story has never been documented, either as a book or a film. This despite the fact that his biography is a fascinating example not only of a person who had to leave his homeland due to the persecution of Jews but also of someone who wanted to return home at all costs but whose return was made everything other than easy. In May 1938, Gruen made his dramatic flight via Switzerland to the USA with the help of a friend dressed as an SA officer, after the Gestapo had already confiscated his apartment. In New York he worked at keeping the promise he had made in his Vienna apartment on the evening of 11 March: if members of the political cabaret should make it to New York, Gruen would organize a Viennese theater group there.

Victor Gruen, geboren Viktor Grünbaum, ist der vielleicht einflussreichste Städteplaner des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der jüdische Emigrant aus Wien gilt als der „Erfinder der Shopping Mall“. Dennoch ist seine Geschichte bislang weder als Buch, noch in Filmform dokumentiert gewesen. Dabei ist gerade seine Biografie ein packendes Beispiel nicht nur für einen Menschen, der im Zuge der Judenverfolgung seine Heimat verlassen musste, sondern auch für einen, der unbedingt wieder „heim“kehren wollte, und dem diese Heimkehr in den 1960er Jahren alles andere als einfach gemacht wurde. Im Mai 1938 gelang Gruen mit Hilfe seines als SA-Offizier verkleideten Freundes eine dramatische Flucht über die Schweiz in die USA, nachdem die Gestapo seine Wohnung bereits in Beschlag genommen hatte. In New York arbeitete er an der Einlösung jenes Versprechens, das er am Abend des 11. März in seiner Wiener Wohnung gegeben hatte: Sollten sich Mitglieder vom Politischen Kabarett nach New York durchschlagen, würde Gruen dort eine Wiener Theatergruppe organisieren.
