The media contain almost daily reports of discrimination, exclusion, violence, racism etc. against people who are different or who think differently than the majority. Civil courage training helps raise awareness, promotion and strengthening of social competence and helps develop individual courses of action in difficult situations. In order to help people to intervene instead of looking away, the Mauthausen Committee Austria has been offering civil courage training since April 2010. Following an examination of the meaning of civil courage, “civil courage under the Nazis” will also be dealt with – an extraordinarily exceptional circumstance. Exceptional circumstances as concern scope of action are found in authoritarian and highly repressive (political) systems. Under the Nazis, courageous acts which transcended the boundaries of the system and were classified as politically inacceptable became acts of resistance.

In den Medien finden sich beinahe täglich Berichterstattungen über Diskriminierung, Ausgrenzung, Gewalt, Rassismus, etc. gegen Menschen die anders sind oder anders denken als die Mehrheit. Zivilcourage–Trainings tragen zur Sensibilisierung, Förderung und Stärkung sozialer Kompetenzen bei und helfen bei der Erarbeitung individueller Handlungsoptionen in schwierigen Situationen. Um Menschen zu helfen einzugreifen anstatt weiterzugehen und wegzuschauen, bietet das Mauthausen Komitee Österreich (MKÖ) seit April 2010 Zivilcourage-Trainings (www.zivilcourage.at) an. Auf Basis der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Zivilcourage wird auch „Zivilcourage im Nationalsozialismus“ behandelt – eine Ausnahmesituation par excellence. Ausnahmesituationen hinsichtlich der Handlungsspielräume von Zivilcourage finden sich in autoritären und hoch repressiven (politischen) Systemen. In der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurde zivilcouragiertes Handeln, das die eng gesetzten Grenzen des Systems überschritt und als politisch unannehmbar eingestuft wurde, zum (politischen) Widerstand.
