The project “Emigration, flight and banishment of Austrian Jews to Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s” is devoted to the flight of Austrian Jews to Palestine in 1938 to 1941 and places it in the context of emigration to Palestine since the 1930s. Emphasis is placed, firstly, on the cooperation between the Jewish Community, the “Central Office for Jewish Emigration” established in August 1938 and the Palestine Office. Secondly, it will take a look at the politics and interests of the British Mandate power, the work of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem and the experiences and fates of the individual refugees. The results of the research will be presented regularly to an academic and non-academic public in lectures and essays. The aim is to write a comprehensive manuscript for a book to be published as part of the series “Writings from the Center for Jewish Studies” (Studien Publishers Innsbruck-Vienna-Munich).

Das Projekt „Emigration, Flucht und Vertreibung österreichischer Jüdinnen und Juden nach Palästina in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren“ widmet sich der Flucht österreichischer Jüdinnen und Juden nach Palästina in den Jahren 1938 bis 1941 und bettet diese in eine Geschichte der Palästinamigration seit den 1930er Jahren ein. Im Fokus steht dabei zum einen die Zusammenarbeit von jüdischer Gemeinde, der im August 1938 eingerichteten „Zentralstelle für jüdische Auswanderung“ und des Palästina-Amtes. Zum anderen wird der Blick auf die Politik und Interessen der britischen Mandatsmacht, der Arbeit der Jewish Agency in Jerusalem wie auch auf die Erfahrungen und das Schicksal der einzelnen Flüchtenden gelenkt. Die Forschungsergebnisse sollen laufend in Vorträgen und Aufsätzen einer wissenschaftlichen und nichtwissenschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit präsentiert werden. Ziel ist die Abfassung eines umfangreichen Buchmanuskripts, das in der Reihe „Schriften des Centrums für Jüdische Studien“ (Studienverlag Innsbruck-Wien-München) erscheinen soll.
