“Suppressed years – the railways in Austria 1938–1945” – an exhibition forming part of the event series “175 years of railways for Austria. 2012 is the year in which Austria can look back on 175 years of railway history. The railway stands for the industrial revolution, economic upswing, getting people moving. Upon the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich the Austrian Federal Railways became part of the German Reich Railway. For the Nazi regime the railways as a means of transport were of great significance in terms of both political power and strategy for the entire wartime economy during World War II and for the Nazi machinery of extermination. Hundreds of thousands of people emigrated by train. Millions of people were taken to concentration camps with the railway. That is the dark history of the railways. Attempts at coming to terms with the Nazi past have been boosted in recent years by several railway companies in Europe. An example is the exhibition “Chartered trains to the death” (German Railways at the initiative of Beate and Serge Klarsfeld), which has been visited by over 300,000 people since it opened in 2008.

„Verdrängte Jahre – Eisenbahn in Österreich 1938–1945“ – eine Ausstellung im Rahmen der Veranstaltungsreihe „175 Jahre Eisenbahn für Österreich“. 2012 ist das Jahr, in dem Österreich auf 175 Jahre Eisenbahn blickt. Die Bahn steht für die industrielle Revolution, für wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung, sie bringt Menschen in Bewegung. Mit dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich wurden die Österreichischen Bundesbahnen Teil der Deutschen Reichsbahn. Für das NS-Regime hatte die Bahn als Transportmittel eine große machtpolitische und strategische Bedeutung sowohl für die gesamte Kriegswirtschaft im Zweiten Weltkrieg als auch für die NS- Vernichtungsmaschinerie. Hunderttausende Menschen sind mit der Bahn in die Emigration gefahren. Millionen Menschen wurden mit der Bahn in die Vernichtungslager gebracht. Das ist die dunkle Geschichte der Bahn. Die historische Aufarbeitung der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit wird in den letzten Jahren durch einige Eisenbahnunternehmen in Europa vorangetrieben. Als Beispiel sei die Ausstellung „Sonderzüge in den Tod“ (DB auf Initiative von Beate und Serge Klarsfeld) genannt, die seit Beginn der Ausstellung 2008 bis heute über 300.000 Menschen besucht haben.
