Research and exhibition project "Romane Thana - Places of the Roma"

The exhibition will be shown in spring 2014 at the Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz and in autumn at the Provincial Museum Burgenland. The exhibition "Romane Thana" approaches the subject on the basis of location, which are presented in five stations. Places where Roma were able to stay short or long term and where they lived and worked with or alongside non-Roma. The historical dimension is an attempt to reconstruct ways of life which no longer exist as a result of the physical extermination of the people in the Holocaust and the change in structure, as a result of which many wares and services offered by the Roma are no longer in demand. The present-day dimension directly refers to the persistent problem of visibility, and the desire of many Roma to remain invisible, non-discernable, as protection from (often alleged) persecution and discrimination.

Die Ausstellung soll im Frühjahr 2014 im Wien Museum Karlsplatz und im Herbst 2014 im Landesmuseum Burgenland gezeigt werden. Die Ausstellung „Romane Thana“ nähert sich dem Thema anhand von Orten, die in fünf Stationen präsentiert werden. Orte, an denen Roma kurz- oder längerfristig bleiben durften und wo sie mit oder neben Nicht-Roma lebten und arbeiteten. In der historischen Dimension ist es der Versuch, Lebensweisen zu rekonstruieren, die verschwunden sind, durch die physische Vernichtung der Menschen selbst im Holocaust und den Strukturwandel, durch den die Nachfrage an vielen Waren und Dienstleistungen, die Roma traditionell anzubieten hatten, verschwunden ist. Die aktuelle Dimension verweist unmittelbar auf die anhaltende Problematik der Sichtbarkeit, auf den Wunsch vieler Roma, unsichtbar, nicht erkennbar zu sein, zum (oft vermeintlichen) Schutz vor Verfolgung und Diskriminierung.
