Hermann Kohn achieved the breakthrough as a piano-playing comedian during World War I under the name Leopoldi. He acquired his mature, artistic character, with which he achieved fame, and which has been captured in a great many recordings, in the interwar years. After years in concentration camps and then in American exile, he returned to Austria and continued his pre-1938 success. He died in 1959 in his hometown, holder of many prestigious awards and the epitome of a “Wiener”. Leopoldi embodies like no other the Viennese musical culture of the inter- and post-war years. Having grown up with the culture of the Viennese folk singers, he created a multi-faceted genre with American jazz and dance musical influences, within the scope of a new cabaret culture and as star of the new mass-medium, the vinyl record. The publication tells Leopoldi’s life story on the basis of his songs. A CD with historical recordings accompanies the text.

Unter dem Namen Leopoldi gelang Hermann Kohn während des Ersten Weltkriegs der Durchbruch als Klavierhumorist. Seine reife künstlerische Gestalt, mit der er zur Berühmtheit gelangte und die in zahlreichen Aufnahmen überliefert ist, gewann er in der Zwischenkriegszeit. Nach Jahren im KZ und im US-amerikanischen Exil kehrte er nach Österreich zurück und schloss an seine Erfolge vor 1938 an. Er starb 1959 in seiner Heimatstadt als Träger hoher Auszeichnungen und als ein Inbegriff des Wieners. Leopoldi verkörpert wie kein Zweiter die Wiener Musikkultur der Zwischen- und Nachkriegsjahre. Aufgewachsen mit der Kultur der Wiener Volkssänger, schuf er ein vielfältiges Liedgenre in der Begegnung mit der amerikanischen Jazz- und Tanzmusik, im Rahmen einer neuen Kabarettkultur und als Star der neuen Massenmedien Schallplatte und Radio. Die Publikation erzählt die Lebensgeschichte Leopoldis entlang seiner Lieder. Eine CD historischer Aufnahmen begleitet den Text.
