From 1941 to 1944, around 500,000 people fell victim to the “forgotten Holocaust” in East Galicia. They were beaten, shot, burned alive, sent to the gas chambers at Belzec. There are countless mass graves in former East Galicia on the territory of the present-day Ukraine. The exact location of many of them is not known. The mass graves in the forest at Hołobutów near the town of Stryj are known. Around one third of the ca. 35,000 residents, of Stryj, situated at a railway junction, were Jewish. Shortly after the invasion of the German Armed Forces on 1 July 1941, the Jews from Stryj and the surrounding area were herded into a small area of the town in cramped conditions. Over time the living conditions for the up to 30,000 detainees increasingly worsened. In fall 1943 the ghetto which had since been established was “dissolved” and Stryj was declared “free of Jews”. This book will also make a contribution towards saving a further piece of Holocaust history from being forgotten.

Dem „vergessenen Holocaust“ in Ostgalizien sind von 1941 bis 1944 ungefähr 500.000 Menschen zum Opfer gefallen. Sie wurden erschlagen, erschossen, verbrannt, in die Gaskammern von Belzec geschickt. Es gibt unzählige Massengräber im ehemaligen Ostgalizien auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Ukraine. Von vielen ist nicht einmal die genaue Lage bekannt. Die Massengräber im Wald von Hołobutów nahe dem Städtchen Stryj sind bekannt. Von den ca. 35.000 Einwohnern des Eisenbahnknotenpunktes Stryj waren etwa ein Drittel Juden. Kurz nach dem Einmarsch der Deutschen Wehrmacht am 1. Juli 1941 wurden die Juden von Stryj und Umgebung in einem Stadtviertel auf engem Raum zusammengepfercht. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden die Lebensbedingungen für die bis zu 30.000 Arretierten immer mehr verschärft. Im Herbst 1943 wurde das mittlerweile eingerichtete Ghetto „aufgelöst“, Stryj für „judenfrei“ erklärt. Dieses Buch soll dazu beitragen, ein weiteres Stück Geschichte des vergessenen Holocaust eben diesem Vergessen zu entreißen.
