Between 1933 and 1941 an estimated 55,000 Jewish emigrants fled to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Around 4,000 were caught up in the occupation of Yugoslavia by Hitler’s Germany and his allies. Their previously uninvestigated tales of flight in the parts of the country occupied by Germany and Italy – their death in concentration camps of the Croatian Ustascha rulers or in camps in Serbia , deportation to Auschwitz or Bergen-Belsen, internment by the Italian Army in Italy or in the occupied territories of the former Yugoslavia, the self-liberation and evacuation with the aid of the Communist partisans on territory under partisan control or to Italy under the protection of the Allies, are reconstructed in this work.

Zwischen 1933 und 1941 flüchteten schätzungsweise 55.000 jüdische Emigrantinnen und Emigranten ins Königreich Jugoslawien. Etwa 4.000 Personen wurden von der Besetzung Jugoslawiens durch Hitlerdeutschland und seine Verbündeten eingeholt. Ihre bislang nicht erforschten Flüchtlingsbiografien in den von den Deutschen und Italienern besetzten Landesteilen – ihr Tod in den Konzentrationslagern der kroatischen Ustascha-Herrschaft oder in Lagern in Serbien, Deportation nach Auschwitz und Bergen-Belsen, Internierung durch die italienische Armee in Italien oder in den besetzten Territorien des ehemaligen Jugoslawien, die Selbstbefreiung und Evakuierung mit Hilfe der kommunistischen Partisanen entweder auf das von den Partisanen kontrollierte Territorium oder aber unter den Schutz der Alliierten nach Italien – werden in dieser Arbeit rekonstruiert.
