The Vienna culture journalist Berta Zuckerkandl is today considered one of the most important female figures in Austria at the turn of the century. First becoming well known for her efforts to support Gustav Klimt and the artists of the Wiener Werkstätte, in the 1920s she increasingly turned her attention toward literature and theater. Together with Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Berta Zuckerkandl became a driving force behind the establishment of the Salzburg Festival. After the “Anschluss” in 1938, Berta Zuckerkandl fled to Paris with her family. In spring 2013, an exhibition at the National Library marking the 75th anniversary of the “Anschluss” traced the escape routes of several Austrian writers, including Berta Zuckerkandl. The diary of Berta Zuckerkandl’s escape released by Czernin Publishers, edited by Theresia Klugsberger and Ruth Pleyer shall accompany the exhibition.

Die Wiener Kulturjournalistin Berta Zuckerkandl gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten Frauengestalten der österreichischen Jahrhundertwende. Bekannt zunächst durch ihren Einsatz für Gustav Klimt und die Kunstschaffenden der Wiener Werkstätte, wandte sie sich in den 1920er-Jahren vermehrt Literatur und Theater zu. Gemeinsam mit Max Reinhardt und Hugo von Hofmannsthal wurde Berta Zuckerkandl zur treibenden Kraft hinter der Gründung der Salzburger Festspiele. Nach dem „Anschluss“ 1938 flüchtete Berta Zuckerkandl mit ihrer Familie nach Paris. Im Frühjahr 2013 zeichnet eine Ausstellung der Nationalbibliothek anlässlich der 75. Wiederkehr des „Anschlusses“ die Fluchtwege einiger österreichischer LiteratInnen nach, darunter den von Berta Zuckerkandl. Begleitend zur Ausstellung erscheint im Czernin Verlag das Fluchttagebuch von Berta Zuckerkandl, herausgegeben von Theresia Klugsberger und Ruth Pleyer.
