Franz Najemnik is one of the last surviving resistance fighters against the Nazi regime in Carinthia. He came into contact with the “Austrian Antifascist Freedom Movement”, a Christian resistance group led by the Priest Dr. Anton Granig which also sought contact to leftist groups and Slovenes, through his Lienz school friend Ernst Ortner. Following a year spent under Gestapo arrest in Klagenfurt and Millstatt, he joined the “Peskoller Group” a Communist resistance group in Villach whose members, the so called “Treffner band” were convicted and executed by Roland Freisler and the People’s Court. Najemnik, who vehemently rejected the cooperation with partisans from the Yugoslav “Osvobodilna fronta”, had left the group and lived in hiding in a cave near Lienz until the end of the war, although on the last day of the war he almost fell victim to a drumhead court martial of the Gestapo who were withdrawing from Lienz. His testimony is one of the most comprehensive by a resistance fighter against the Nazi regime in Carinthia.

Franz Najemnik gehört zu den letzten noch lebenden Widerstandskämpfern gegen das NS-Regime in Kärnten. Durch seinen Lienzer Schulfreund Ernst Ortner kam er in Kontakt mit der „Antifaschistischen Freiheitsbewegung Österreichs“, einer christlichen Widerstandsgruppe um den Klagenfurter Priester Dr. Anton Granig, die auch Kontakte zu linken Kreisen und Slowenen suchte. Nach einem Jahr Gestapohaft in Klagenfurt und Millstatt schloss er sich der „Gruppe Peskoller“ an, einer kommunistischen Widerstandsgruppe in Villach, deren Mitglieder 1944 als so genannte „Treffner Bande“ von Roland Freisler und dem Volksgerichtshof zum Tode verurteilt und hingerichtet wurden. Najemnik, der die Kooperation der Partisanen mit der jugoslawischen „Osvobodilna fronta“ vehement ablehnte, hatte sich von der Gruppe getrennt und hielt sich bis Kriegsende in einer Höhle bei Lienz versteckt, wäre aber fast am letzten Kriegstag noch einem Standgericht der aus Lienz abziehenden Gestapo zum Opfer gefallen. Seine Erinnerungen sind das umfangreichste Lebenszeugnis eines Widerstandskämpfers gegen das NS-Regime in Kärnten.
