The book deals with a chapter of contemporary Tyrolean history during the Nazi era and deals with the fate of Tyroleans who stood before the People’s Court due to their resistance against the Nazi regime. Focus of this monograph is the story of the resistance groups in Tyrol which, from 1941 onward, were predominantly active along the railways from Innsbruck to Kufstein and Kitzbühel. They were, on the one hand, the “Revolutionary Socialists” led by the Brunner spouses in Wörgl, whose activities were inspired by the German Social Democrat Waldemar von Knoeringen and which led to the development of a resistance network in Bavaria, Salzburg, Vienna and Tyrol. Concrete acts of resistance such as producing flyers or carrying out acts of sabotage were rejected, instead – in line with the German “fresh start” movement – they planned to train a selected squad for the time following the certain defeat of the Nazis. A further network of resistance groups developed around Kufstein and Kitzbühel following a visit by the Berlin Communist Robert Uhrig. In both cases, a special role was played by railway workers. Max Bär, a Communist operating legally and illegally prior to 1938, tried to form a resistance group in Schwaz from 1942. The story of Josef Axinger from Axams shows that not only the organized resistance was pursued by all available means. Like Axinger, all leading members of the leftist resistance paid for their beliefs with their lives.

Das Buch behandelt ein Kapitel der Tiroler Zeitgeschichte der NS-Zeit und beschäftigt sich mit dem Schicksal von Tirolerinnen und Tirolern, die wegen ihres Widerstandes gegen das NS-Regime vor dem Volksgerichtshof standen. Im Mittelpunkt dieser wissenschaftlichen Monografie steht die Geschichte jener Widerstandsgruppen in Tirol, die sich ab 1941 hauptsächlich entlang der Bahnstrecken von Innsbruck bis Kufstein und Kitzbühel bildeten. Es handelte sich dabei einerseits um die „Revolutionären Sozialisten“ um das Ehepaar Brunner in Wörgl, deren Tätigkeit vom deutschen Sozialdemokraten Waldemar von Knoeringen inspiriert wurde und die zum Aufbau eines Widerstandsnetzes in Bayern, Salzburg, Wien und eben Tirol führte. Konkrete Widerstandsaktionen wie die Herstellung von Flugblättern oder die Durchführung von Sabotageakten wurden abgelehnt, vielmehr – im Sinne der deutschen „Neu Beginnen“-Bewegung – die Schulung ausgewählter Kader für die Zeit nach der als sicher erwarteten Niederlage der Nationalsozialisten geplant. Ein weiteres Netz von Widerstandsgruppen entstand im Raum Kufstein – Kitzbühel nach dem Besuch des Berliner Kommunisten Robert Uhrig. In beiden Fällen spielten Eisenbahner eine besondere Rolle. In Schwaz versuchte Max Bär, bereits vor 1938 legal und illegal tätiger Kommunist, ab 1942 eine Widerstandsgruppe aufzubauen. Die Geschichte des Josef Axinger aus Axams zeigt, dass nicht nur der organisierte Widerstand mit allen Mitteln verfolgt wurde. So wie Axinger bezahlten alle führenden Mitglieder des linken Widerstands ihre Haltung mit dem Tod.
