Call me a Jew attempts to find out what it means to be Jewish in our age and in our country. The film shows images of a self-determined life of young, Jewish Austrians and Israelis, who describe the self-presentation and reflection of Jewish existence after the Shoah. It attempts to identify the interweaving of yesterday and today, of private and public and to draw conclusions from the past. It documents the knowledge and memories of their grandparents and the knowledge and ways of thinking of the generation of great-grandchildren, regarding the past, the present and the future. Or not wanting to know. Is the youth even interested in learning what happened “back then”? What shapes the image of Jewish life in the present, following the rupture of civilization? Is, better late than never, a generation growing up which is in a position to deal with the pain and loss of the survivors? A society which acknowledges its responsibility and is prepared to support the victims of the Holocaust – before the last eyewitnesses die, the last voice falls silent? The film takes a clear stance against forgetting.

„Call Me A Jew“ versucht herauszufinden, was es bedeutet, in unserer Zeit und in diesem Land ein Jude zu sein. Der Film zeigt Bilder eines selbstbestimmten Lebens junger jüdischer ÖsterreicherInnen und Israelis, die von der Selbstinszenierung und -reflexion jüdischer Existenz nach der Shoah erzählen. Er versucht, die Verflechtung von Gestern und Heute, von Privatem und Öffentlichem herauszuarbeiten und aus der Vergangenheit Schlüsse ziehen. Er dokumentiert das Wissen und Erinnern der Großeltern ebenso wie das Wissen und Denken der Urenkelgeneration über Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft. Oder das Nicht-Wissen-Wollen. Besteht bei den Jungen überhaupt noch Interesse, erklärt zu bekommen, was „damals“ war? Was prägt das Bild jüdischen Lebens in der Gegenwart, nach dem Zivilisationsbruch? Wächst spät, aber doch eine Generation heran, die imstande ist, sensibel mit dem Schmerz und Verlust der Überlebenden umzugehen? Eine Gesellschaft, die ihre Verantwortung erkennt und bereit ist, die Opfer des Holocaust zu unterstützen – bevor die letzten Zeitzeuginnen sterben, die letzte Stimme verstummt? Der Film bezieht klar Position gegen das Vergessen.
