The film seeks to answer the question: what does knowledge of your own history have to do with creating a better future? This documentary investigates the courageous life, the work and visions of Dr. Gerda Lerner and connects the creative and collective spirit of other important activists of women’s history. Gerda Lerner was born into a middle class Jewish family in Vienna in 1920. As a youth, she joined the underground movement against the Nazis and was sent to prison at the age of 18. In 1939 she fled Austria and lived for a few years as a worker in New York City before marrying the American filmmaker Carl Lerner. Aged 40, she returned to school and graduated from Columbia University with a degree in history. This film investigates Lerner’s most important ideas and knowledge and investigated the development of her journey as a Jewish refugee social reformer, writer, feminist historian, mother and wife.

Der Film geht der Frage nach: Was hat das Wissen der eigenen Geschichte mit der Schaffung einer besseren Zukunft zu tun? Dieser Dokumentarfilm untersucht das mutige Leben, die Arbeit und die Visionen von Dr. Gerda Lerner und bindet auch den kreativen und kollektiven Geist anderer bedeutender Aktivistinnen der Womens’ History ein. Gerda Lerner wurde 1920 in einer gutbürgerlichen jüdischen Familie in Wien geboren. Als Jugendliche schloss sie sich der Untergrundbewegung gegen die Nazis an und kam mit 18 Jahren ins Gefängnis. Sie floh 1939 aus Österreich und lebte für ein paar Jahre als Arbeiterin in New York City, bevor sie den amerikanischen Filmemacher Carl Lerner heiratete. Sie kehrte mit 40 Jahren zur Schule zurück und promovierte an der Columbia University in Geschichte. Dieser Film erkundet Lerners wichtigste Ideen und Erkenntnisse und untersucht die Entwicklung ihrer Reise als jüdischer Flüchtling, Sozialreformerin, Schriftstellerin, feministische Historikerin, Mutter und Ehefrau.
