Herbert Exenberger devoted decades of his life to the collection and evaluation of the material on the “Association of Socialist Writers”. In 2000 he published a book on the subject, “As if the world were aflame. An anthology of murdered Socialist writers”, which was published by the Association for the Promotion of and Research into anti-Fascist literature. In this important work, which is unfortunately out of print, he was only able to publish a relatively small part of his comprehensive research. Of the 53 members of the Association, only eight are dealt with in the book. The by far more comprehensive collection is unique. It contains first editions of published books, newspaper cuttings, original manuscripts, photos, documents posters and a detailed documentation of other materials on the writers of the “Association of Socialist Writers”. Following the premature death of Herbert Exenberger on 8 October 2009, the collection was passed to the Theodor Kramer Society. In order to make this collection accessible to interested persons and researchers, it is necessary to digitally process and archive it. It is also necessary to make thousands of copies or scans of letters and original manuscripts to secure the collection (in cooperation with Treventus – Mechatronics). In 2014 the collection will be accessible through the website of the Theodor Kramer Society (www.theodorkramer.at) and the BSA (www.bas.at).

Herbert Exenberger widmete Jahrzehnte seines Lebens der Sammlung und Aufarbeitung des Materials zur „Vereinigung sozialistischer Schriftsteller“. Im Jahr 2000 publizierte er hierzu das Buch „Als stünd‘ die Welt in Flammen. Eine Anthologie ermordeter sozialistischer SchriftstellerInnen“, welches vom Verein zur Förderung und Erforschung antifaschistischer Literatur herausgegeben wurde. In diesem wichtigen, leider schon vergriffenen Buch konnte er jedoch nur einen relativ kleinen Teil seiner ausführlichen Recherchen veröffentlichen. Von den insgesamt 53 Mitgliedern der Vereinigung finden sich im Buch acht wieder. Die weitaus umfangreichere Sammlung stellt einen einzigartigen Bestand dar. Sie umfasst Erstausgaben der Buchpublikationen, Zeitungsausschnitte, Originalmanuskripte, Fotos, Dokumente, Plakate sowie ausführliche Dokumentationen anderer Materialien zu den SchriftstellerInnen der „Vereinigung sozialistischer Schriftsteller“. Nach dem viel zu frühen Tod Herbert Exenbergers am 8. Oktober 2009 ging die Sammlung an die Theodor Kramer Gesellschaft. Um diese Sammlung interessierten Personen und der Forschung zugänglich zu machen, ist es notwendig, den Bestand EDV-mäßig und archivalisch aufzuarbeiten. Ebenso ist es erforderlich, zur Sicherung des Bestandes tausende von Schutzkopien bzw. Scans von Brief- und Manuskriptoriginalen anzufertigen (in Kooperation mit Treventus – Mechatronics). 2014 wird man auf die Sammlung über die Homepage der Theodor Kramer Gesellschaft (www.theodorkramer.at) und des BSA (www.bsa.at) zugreifen können.
