Places of Remembrance / The Vienna Project is a short-term Holocaust memorial which will be created on the streets of Vienna. The memorial will be presented as a participatory expression of remembrance. The project Places of Remembrance / The Vienna Project is in memory of the “Anschluss” and the end of the war and is aimed at 5 May 2013, Austria’s Day of Remembrance Against Violence and Racism in Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism. It marks the 75 anniversary of the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich and ends on the day marking the end of World War II in Europe. The project begins with the introduction of 38 art installations on sidewalks at places where criminal acts took place under the Nazi regime from 1938 onward. On these areas, the following question will be able to be read in nine languages. “What happens when we forget to remember?” At these places, students will carry out digital interviews, and theater programs will be offered. At the closing event, there will be a running picture showing the names of the victims of the genocide from four databases, surrounded by victims and opponents of the regime who were able to flee.

Orte der Erinnerung / The Vienna Project ist ein auf begrenzte Dauer angelegtes Holocaust-Mahnmal, das auf den Straßen von Wien entstehen soll. Das Mahnmal wird als ein partizipatorischer Ausdruck der Erinnerung präsentiert. Das Projekt Orte der Erinnerung / The Vienna Project entsteht in Erinnerung an den Anschluss sowie das Ende des Krieges und ist für den 5. Mai 2013, Österreichs Gedenktag gegen Gewalt und Rassismus in Gedenken an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus, vorgesehen. Es kennzeichnet den 75. Jahrestag der Eingliederung Österreichs in das Deutsche Reich und endet am Tag, der das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Europa markiert. Das Projekt beginnt mit der Einführung von 38 Kunstinstallationen auf Gehwegen an Orten, an denen dokumentierte kriminelle Handlungen unter dem Naziregime ab 1938 stattfanden. Auf den vorgesehenen Flächen wird die folgende Frage in neun Sprachen zu lesen sein: „Was geschieht, wenn wir vergessen uns zu erinnern?“ An den Stationen sollen StudentInnen bzw. SchülerInnen digitale Interviews durchführen, und Theaterprogramme sollen dargeboten werden. Für die Abschlussveranstaltung ist ein laufendes Bild vorgesehen, das die Namen der Opfer des Völkermordes aus vier Datenbanken aufführt, umgeben von Opfern und Regimegegnern, die fliehen konnten.
