Event announcement: Award Ceremony for the Simon Wiesenthal Prize

Parliament, Monday, 13 March 2023, at 6 p.m.

06 Mar 2023

Vienna - On 13 March, the Simon Wiesenthal Prize for civic engagement to combat antisemitism and to educate people about the Holocaust will be awarded for the second time at an event held at the Austrian Parliament.

After the opening address by National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, actress Martina Ebm will give a reading in honour of the inaugural Simon Wiesenthal Prize winner Karl Pfeifer, who recently passed away.

The award ceremony in the three prize categories will be followed by a panel discussion on the future of remembrance. Participants will include contemporary eyewitness Lucia Heilman, Racheli Kreisberg, the granddaughter of Simon Wiesenthal and founder of the SWIGGI memorial initiative, and Katharina von Schnurbein, the EU Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and chair of the Simon Wiesenthal Prize jury.

The award ceremony will be moderated by ORF journalist Lisa Gadenstätter.

About the Simon Wiesenthal Prize

This year, a total of 263 entries were submitted for the Simon Wiesenthal Prize from 33 countries worldwide, including entries from Israel, the USA, Argentina, Peru and South Africa as well as Austrian and European projects. The Prize, which is endowed with an annual sum of 30,000 €, is awarded by the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for the Victims of National Socialism, established at the Austrian Parliament. The Prize was created to honour the memory of Simon Wiesenthal, who made a formidable contribution to the international reckoning with the crimes of National Socialism.
