From the Victim Paradigm to a European Culture of Remembrance

January 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. To mark this occasion, on 29 January 2015 the concept for the new Austrian national exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the work already undertaken, and the parameters for the project will be presented at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna.

The Diplomatic Academy Vienna and the Future Fund of the Republic of Austria, in cooperation with the National Fund of the Republic of Austria, extend an invitation to the fifteenth project presentation and discussion from the series “Workshop discussions”.

The exhibition concept “Far Removed. Austria in Auschwitz” highlights the geographical distance between Austria and Auschwitz and, at the same time, the physical removal of those deported to Auschwitz, from both post-Anschluss Austria and the realm of the living. The exhibition puts this notion, “far removed”, at its center and describes the genesis of events in Austria and their culmination in Auschwitz, thereby creating a connection between the two historical locations. The portrayal of the interwoven history of the Austrian victims and perpetrators contributes to efforts to provide a fitting portrayal the role played by Austria in the history of Nazism.
