Lives Remembered, Volume 9. “Exile in South America” (only available in German)
Book presentation at the Austrian Embassy Buenos Aires on 5 November 2026.
Volume 9 provides an insight into the stories of persecution and flight of Jewish families from Austria who were able to flee to the South American countries Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, through 12 (auto)biographical accounts. Two descendants also share their thoughts and memories in this volume.
In her guest contribution, historian Linda Erker traces the path of Jewish people in Austria following the '"Anschluss", which led to their flight, through European refugee policy and possible routes of exile, as well as support networks, and on to the situation in the various Central and South American countries of arrival. She highlights examples of countries and stories of flight that extend beyond the life stories and regions covered in this volume, thus providing a broader context for the collected memories.
The subject-specific glossary at the end of the book helps to contextualise the events, reveals connections, and encourages further reading and research.
The volume is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs, documents, and diagrams depicting the escape routes of individual refugees.
