On 8 May 2026, the Republic of Austria marked the 81st anniversary of liberation from Nazi rule and the end of the Second World War in Europe in a solemn ceremony held in the Congress Hall on Ballhausplatz.
Eighty-one years ago today, the Second World War came to an end in Europe. The 8 May 1945 marked the victory over Nazi tyranny, making this date not only cause for celebration, but also an opportunity to commemorate the victims and to reflect on the fragility of peace.
A significant milestone has been reached in the planning for the memorial to the Roma and Sinti victims of National Socialism: the location has been decided. The memorial will be erected in Weghuberpark, in front of the Ministry of Justice in Vienna’s 7th District.
